As complex biologics become more common, traditional bioprocessing systems are struggling to keep pace. Conventional methods, relying on at-line sampling, off-line analytics and legacy control systems, are proving too slow and limited. “Bioprocess monitoring is shifting toward in-line and on-line analytics,” Martinsson tells GEN. “This transition will support automation, enhance process control, and enable faster decision-making.”
However, implementing real-time monitoring presents challenges. Martinssons explains that many sensor technologies are designed for flexible research settings, not large-scale manufacturing, which demands calibration, traceability, and robust performance under varying conditions. “To deliver meaningful insights across diverse bioprocesses, sensors must offer high sensitivity, anti-fouling performance, and resilience to varying buffer, pH, and flow conditions,” he says.
Integration across diverse platforms is equally critical. “Bioprocess systems differ widely in format, hardware, and software,” Martinsson notes. “Sensor solutions must therefore be adaptable, scalable, and digitally compatible to support seamless implementation across diverse manufacturing platforms.”
Industry leaders agree. Dr. Simon Wieninger of Eppendorf calls for unified sensing, analytics, and control platforms, while others note that the lack of open standards slows data flow and innovation. Yet adoption is accelerating, aided by open protocols, AI, and cloud computing that turn data into actionable insights.
For Martinsson, the path forward is clear: real-time analytics and smart sensor integration will shift bioprocessing from reactive to predictive–paving the way for intelligent, data-driven biomanufacturing.
